On occasion, a player comes along who does not belong in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a player so dominant in his sport that he deserves a higher honor.

A player such as Rod Woodson.

Who says? How about these guys:

"Without a doubt,'' Bill Cowher said, "he'll go down as one of the greatest players to ever play the game.''

"If you tell me Rod Woodson is your top defensive back of all time," said Dick LeBeau, "you will get no argument from me because he certainly merits that."

"He was a player you get once in a long time," said Dan Rooney.

And more ...

"He, in my opinion, might be the greatest athlete that Chuck Noll ever drafted," said Mel Blount. "And that's saying a lot when you think of all the Hall of Famers. This guy was special."

"He was one of those rare top draft picks who probably even exceeded what people thought he would be," said Tom Donahoe.

And, from Tony Dungy on coaching Woodson his first two seasons with the Steelers: "You could see the specialness. We felt he'd be a multi-year Pro Bowler. You could see that from the first day."

Woodson, who will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug. 8, ranks among the best defensive backs in NFL history -- if not the best -- by testimony, by performance and by gaudy statistics.

Consider:

His 71 career interceptions rank third in NFL history while his 1,483 yards in returns and 12 touchdowns on interceptions are No. 1. He made the NFL's 75th Anniversary team in 1994, one of only five active players to do so -- 10 years before his retirement. He made 11 Pro Bowls in his 17 NFL seasons and was the only player to ever make it as a cornerback, safety and return man. No defensive back ever made more.

"Gosh, I guess I was all right," Woodson said when presented with the evidence. "It's kind of tough putting myself on that pedestal. I have a hard time doing that."

Instead, he took the stand to thank the many coaches who helped school him, those such as Noll, Dungy, John Fox, Rod Rust, LeBeau, Marvin Lewis, Brian Billick and Jim Mora.

"I was taught extremely well by some of best coaches in NFL history right there in Pittsburgh," said Woodson, 44. "Without them, I don't think I'd be in the Hall of Fame. I was naturally gifted, but how many times do you see naturally gifted guys who don't do anything?"

Woodson spent his first NFL decade with the Steelers, then left as a free agent to play one season in San Francisco, four in Baltimore and two in Oakland. He played in Super Bowls with the Steelers and Raiders and earned his only NFL championship with the Ravens after the 2000 season, after he moved to safety.

There are reasons some athletes dominate a sport more than others, and there was no mystery why Woodson was able to do so. Not only did he have good size at 6 feet, 200 pounds to play either cornerback or safety, he had everything else to go with it.

"Let's look at it this way: What is his minus? What is his weakness? He had none," said LeBeau, Woodson's secondary coach and later coordinator with the Steelers in the 1990s. "He had size, he had strength, he had speed, he had reaction, he had great instinct and he was very, very smart."

He also did not take his talent for granted. Dungy recognized that quickly, especially as Woodson and the rest of the Steelers endured a 5-11 season in 1988.

"He was very, very determined. His mindset was, "We have all these young guys who are going to be great players and I'm going to be one of this group'. You couldn't measure that pride, the determination, the desire to be the best."

And to think the Steelers got him with the 10th pick in the 1987 draft from Purdue. Think Cleveland and Arizona might like a redo on that one?

The Steelers once passed over Jim Brown in the draft, but it was payback time when the Browns passed over Woodson to claim Mike Junkin with the fifth overall pick (Junkin played three NFL seasons, two in Cleveland). Arizona drafted quarterback Kelly Stouffer with the sixth pick (Stouffer held out all of '87, was traded and played four seasons in Seattle).

"You can always count on those franchises for help,'' said Donahoe, then a Steelers scout who would become their director of football operations. "Everyone was shocked he kept sliding.''

So shocked that when Dungy asked Noll when he should visit Purdue in the spring of '87 to see him -- as was traditionally done by the position coaches -- Noll told him not to bother because they would not have a chance to draft him.

Shortly after they snapped him up with the 10th pick, Noll declared, "I'm in love with him."

That love affair had a rocky start because Woodson did not sign until early November of his rookie season after the 1987 players strike. During that summer and fall away from football, he ran for the L.A. Track Club on the European track tour and his time of 13.29 seconds in the 110 hurdles was the fourth-best in the world that year.

The only four-time Big Ten champ of the 55-yard hurdles still wishes he had run in the 1988 Olympics. "It always haunted me; what could I have done?"

Instead, he spent a long career haunting quarterbacks and receivers. He even played wide receiver for a few plays one game after hounding new coach Bill Cowher to try him there.

Woodson helped revive a Steelers team that had slumped in the mid-to-late 1980s, making the playoffs for the first time in five seasons in 1989. Starting in 1992, when Cowher became coach, Woodson was part of the Blitzburgh defense that dominated the NFL, but did not win a Super Bowl.

"It was a thrill really to just watch somebody be able to dominate the backfield like that," said former Steelers safety Carnell Lake, now coaching UCLA's cornerbacks. "Rod was a true professional in every sense. He was one of the last guys out at night, one of the harder workers on our team. He knew football, had a great instinct for football and wasn't afraid to take risks on the field. He's one of those guys that when we needed a play to happen, it happened."

Woodson's only appearance in the Super Bowl with the Steelers came after his most devastating moment in the NFL, when his ACL tore while he tried to tackle Detroit's Barry Sanders in the 1995 season opener at Three Rivers Stadium.

Since it generally was understood to take one year to recover from such an injury, Woodson's season seemed over. Well, his regular season anyway. Rather than place his star on injured reserve, Cowher took an unprecedented approach and held a roster spot open all year, just in case.

"That's one of the great feel-good stories of my coaching career," said LeBeau. "Coach Cowher saved that spot throughout the season and never saw fit to take that last spot and saved it for Rod. It was, in a way, a tribute to what a great player Rod was."

As Cowher remembers, "He was making progress and it was Rod Woodson. It meant so much to us. We put Carnell Lake at corner and Willie Williams started. Rod was coaching those corners and it kept him alive and ready. He had given so much of himself to our team, I thought it was a small thing to give him an opportunity to play in a Super Bowl."

Woodson did make it back to play in the nickel and dime defenses of the Steelers' 27-17 loss to Dallas in Super Bowl XXX.

It was the beginning of the end for Woodson with the Steelers. He played one more season and left as a free agent under sour circumstances.

Woodson had another Pro Bowl season in 1996, his last under contract with the Steelers, but he was not the same player as before the injury. At the end, Dan Rooney said he thought Woodson should be moved to free safety but that Cowher and Donahoe believed his knee and an injured shoulder would limit him there.

"There was a lot of medical evaluation with Rod and where he was in his career and where Rod thought he was," Cowher says today. "And certainly it proved out Rod was able to play a lot longer than we thought at the time."

Blount, the Hall of Fame cornerback from the 1970s, believes the Steelers did not try hard enough to keep him.

"This guy was special," Blount said. "The Steelers might not ever admit it, but I said it when it happened and I'll say it today, they made a big mistake when they let him get out of here. I think he proved that by having a great career and winning a championship somewhere else. He was a Steeler." Woodson, bitter at the time, now believes leaving helped him. He played one year in San Francisco, then moved to Baltimore, to free safety and to a Super Bowl ring.

"It was a journey I had to take as person and player,'' Woodson said. "Even though I wanted to stay in Pittsburgh, it wasn't in my journey, it wasn't for me."

He arrived in Baltimore in 1998 with great young defensive talent surrounding him.

"I saw this young talent and all the stuff I learned in Pittsburgh I got to give back a lot more in Baltimore, where they put me in the locker room in the middle of Peter Boulware, Ray Lewis and Jamie Sharper.

"All the stuff I learned from all these coaches, I got to talk to them about. It was fun to take that role, kind of an elder spokesman."

It was a two-way street in Baltimore, where the Ravens helped Woodson as well.

"Rod was kind of an anchor for us," says Brian Billick, who became the Ravens' coach in Woodson's second season there. "Obviously, by the time he came here, he had established Hall of Fame credentials.

"At that point in his career, it was all about one thing -- he had the big contracts, the Pro Bowls, the fame and everything that goes with a Hall of Famer. But he did not have a ring. His purity of intentions was a great benchmark for us."

Billick said rather than want to hog the spotlight, Woodson often deferred to Ray Lewis and let him have the spotlight "because Rod saw it was good for the team. That says a lot about Rod Woodson. Sometimes guys demand that role, but he saw a purpose in Ray Lewis having it."

He also had a new role with the Ravens, that of free safety. He played the position in high school and college but played cornerback his first 11 years in the NFL.

"That's a tougher transition than people realize," Billick said.

Said LeBeau, one of the NFL's great corners himself, "You're seeing a different perspective on plays." But, "Rod was one of those rare guys who could play any position at any stage of his career."

And Woodson kept playing, and playing. In a sport where the average career lasts 31/2 seasons, Woodson played 17, closing it out in Oakland after an injury in 2003 at age 38. At 37, in 2002 in Oakland's Super Bowl season, he led the NFL with eight interceptions.

"He had great anticipation, range, just the ability to be around the football and that creates that type of statistic," Donahoe said. "A lot of people say guys get put at corner because they can't catch, but that was not the case with Rod."

Today, Woodson, his wife and five children live in suburban Oakland. He moved there from Gibsonia after his retirement when he went to work for the NFL Network, based in Los Angeles.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame does not make a member declare which team he will represent upon induction, but Woodson's heart remains with the Steelers.

"Sometime we have to separate the business and the game," Woodson said, "and sometimes that's hard. Sweat equity. Sometimes, for players, it's more difficult than the team might think it is."

CANTON, Ohio — Ralph C. Wilson Jr. and Bruce Smith felt humbled Friday as they waited to take their place in pro football history.

Smith and Wilson struggled to describe the significance of the honor that awaits them tonight when they are inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

"This already has been an incredible ride," Smith said Friday afternoon. "It hasn't even set in yet in terms of the emotions I'm going to feel when the ceremony starts. I'm just overwhelmed."

"I never, ever expected this," Wilson said. "This is still a big surprise."

Wilson and Smith will be among six men inducted into the Hall of Fame's Class of 2009 tonight. Also entering the Hall will be offensive lineman Randall McDaniel, defensive back Rod Woodson, and two deceased former greats, linebacker Derrick Thomas and receiver Bob Hayes.

Wilson will be the first to speak at the ceremony, which runs from 7 to 10 p.m. (ESPN). Smith will be the last to speak.

Wilson's calling card for 50 years in football has been as a founding member of "the Foolish Club," the original eight owners of the American Football League. After attending an exclusive luncheon Friday that included about 80 current Hall of Famers, Wilson realized that tonight's honor supersedes that distinction.

"After coming from the luncheon today with all the Hall of Famers, I've thought during my lifetime I'm a member of an exclusive club," Wilson said. "But it's nothing like the Hall of Fame. It's not only a club. The players care for each other so much. ... It's a fraternity. To be a member of it, hey, there's no words to express it."

Wilson, however, still managed to search for some humor, as is his custom, during a 45-minute meeting with members of the media.

Asked if he was nervous about his speech, Wilson cracked: "It's going to be very, very boring."

"I'm liable to ramble on, and they're going to ring the bell on me," Wilson said.

Wilson, in fact, has a 12-minute time limit on his speech.

"After 50 years, they give me 12 minutes," he said with a laugh.

How will he sum up 50 years in football, he was asked.

"I don't know," he said. "It's not easy."

Wilson will be introduced in a two-minute presentation by ESPN broadcaster Chris Berman. Smith will be introduced by former Bills assistant coach Ted Cottrell.

Both Wilson and Smith know that they will be received by a partisan crowd. Bills fans have become famous for packing the stands of Fawcett Stadium, as they did for the inductions of Jim Kelly, Marv Levy and Thurman Thomas. About 30 percent of the tickets for the event went to people from the 716 area code. A crowd of between 12,000 and 15,000 is expected. Wilson invited more than 700 people to the event. Smith's invitation list was about 450.

"Everybody knew Bruce was going in," said Kelly. "But to have Mr. Wilson go in on this day, on this year — the 50th anniversary of the team — is something very, very special."

"I guess I'm clean up and Mr. Wilson is first," Smith said of the speaking order. "I've got a lot of time to think. I guess since we have such a great following by Bills fans, I think it's fitting. ... It will be exciting. It will be loud. The Bills' fans are the greatest."

Kelly had breakfast with Smith Friday and gave him some final tips on his speech.

"More than anything, I told him don't ad lib," Kelly said. "It's very easy once you go off on a tangent to look up and just talk from your heart, which is good. But there's only one time you give your Hall of Fame speech and there's only one time you can forget somebody, and you don't want to do that. If he forgets one person [that he wanted to thank], trust me, he will hear it the rest of his life."

Kelly knows it will be emotional.

"Already, the over-under on Bruce crying is three times," Kelly said. "I say he'll probably break down twice, maybe three times. But no more than that."

Wilson and Smith received their gold-colored Hall of Fame sport coats at a dinner Friday night. They will receive Hall of Fame rings at some point during the regular season.

Wilson and Smith will bring to nine the number of former Bills in the Hall. The others are Kelly, Joe DeLamielleure, Marv Levy, James Lofton, Billy Shaw, O.J. Simpson and Thurman Thomas.

Darren Mack Gets Maximum Sentence for Killing Wife, Shooting Judge

An emotional judge sentenced a former Reno pawn shop owner to life in prison on Friday for killing his wife and shooting the judge who was handling their bitter divorce.

District Judge Douglas Herndon sentenced Darren Mack to a minimum of 36 years in prison before issuing a tearful plea for reconciliation among the families involved on behalf of Mack's daughter.

Mack, 46, pleaded guilty in November to murder in the June 2006 stabbing death of his wife, Charla, and the equivalent of no contest to attempted murder in the same-day sniper-style shooting of Family Court Judge Chuck Weller. Weller, who was struck by fragments of a bullet, shot through a window at the Washoe County courthouse, has recovered from his wounds.

Herndon imposed the maximum terms of a plea deal by sentencing Mack to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 20 years on the murder charge. The judge also upheld the recommendation of Special Prosecutor Christopher Lalli by sentencing Mack to 40 years with parole possible after 16 years for attempted murder with a deadly weapon. Both terms are to run back-to-back.

In handing down the sentence, Herndon cited the heinous nature of the crimes and Mack's lack of remorse.

"The truth is Mr. Mack is guilty of these crimes, but he doesn't want to hear anything about that," the judge said.

After sentencing Mack, Herndon issued an emotional plea for Mack's family and his wife's survivors to "be a bigger person" for the sake of the couple's 9-year-old daughter.

"You have a young child at a very impressionable age, to enter soon her teen years and then adult life," Herndon said, pausing to compose himself.

"You all can either choose to raise her, disparaging her parents on each side," he said, "or you can try to get past the court cases, the criminal proceedings. ... and teach her good things about both these parents."

"She needs to be raised with hugs and kisses," Herndon said with tears visible in his eyes.

During testimony Thursday, Mack reiterated his claims that he acted in self defense when the slashed his wife's throat in the garage of his southeast Reno town house.

He also has argued that he was coerced by his former lawyers into the plea deal, and suggested the attorneys, prosecutors, investigators and law enforcement officers who investigated the case were corrupt.

Herndon said while he allowed Mack to speak at length, he never said what the judge hoped he'd hear: "I'm sorry."

Herndon's sentencing followed emotional testimony earlier Friday by Charla Mack's family and Weller.

Soorya Townley described how she and her daughter had grown closer as they got older.

"I was one of those lucky mothers to be best friends with my daughter," she said. "In those last years, Charla and I cleared our past mother-daughter conflicts."

She said her daughter's dream was to sing professionally, or start a business developing seminars for divorcing couples.

"Charla believed ... she could even tame Darren's rage" and get him involved," Townley said.

Mack hung his head in his hands and appeared to cry when Townley
concluded her testimony with a song Charla had recorded before her
death.

"It was a song she wanted to sing to Darren," Townley said.

Authorities said Mack, upset with contentious divorce proceedings and his belief that Weller was corrupt, killed his estranged wife when she arrived to drop off their daughter.

Charla Mack had filed for divorce in 2005. In court documents, her lawyer said Darren Mack ignored Weller's order to pay her $10,000 a month in temporary alimony. Weller found him in contempt of court, but Mack filed for bankruptcy to avoid paying.

The lawyer also said in documents that Mack continued to live a lavish lifestyle, took frequent vacations with girlfriends and often attended "swinger" parties.

The pathologist who conducted the autopsy on Charla Mack said she died from at least seven different stab wounds, including one to the neck near her collarbone.

Mack then drove to downtown a parking garage, where he shot Weller from 170 yards away. In his plea, Mack admitted shooting Weller, but denied he intended to kill him.

After shooting the judge, Mack fled to Mexico, where he voluntarily surrendered 11 days later.

His trial, which was moved to Las Vegas because of extensive media coverage in Reno, ended Nov. 5 when Mack entered his pleas after prosecutors had finished presenting their case. Soon after, he fired his previous lawyers, hired William Routsis to represent him, and tried unsuccessfully to withdraw his pleas and get another trial.

On Friday, Routsis said he would take the case to the Nevada Supreme Court, which this week denied his motion seeking to block the sentencing and allow Mack to withdraw his pleas.

Lalli was pleased. "A very sad chapter in the history of this community has come to an end," he said.

UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn vs. Kenny Florian (155-pound limit)

Round one: Penn comes out aggressive. Head kick from Florian blocked. Leg kick from Florian is caught and Penn lands a right that puts Ken Flo on his butt but only for a minute. Nice elbow from Penn as Florian gets back up against the cage. Both guys are tied up in the ring. Elbow from Penn. Their tied up against the fence now and Penn is trying to land some rights. Florian gets free and now is going for a take down on Penn while their clinched up against the fence. Penn slips out and lands a good right. Florian goes for a single leg and cant finish it. Penn ducks under a left and lands a big right!!! Florian looks rocked, and then Penn charges in and lands a flying knee!! Another right from Penn and thats the bell. Penn took that one 10-9 but it was pretty close until the last minute flurry.

Round two: Florian looking to keep some serious distance from Penn. Leg kick from Florian, and then he charges in and their clinched against the fence once again. BJ with underhooks. They get free’d up once again. BJ with a slow methodical pace trying not to gas himself and Ken Flo looks a little more hectic trying to push the pace and the fight. Florian again goes for a double leg and Penn is having none of it. Penn in the clinch lands a decent knee. Florian misses one of his patented elbows. Florian misses with a superman punch. Penn with a lazy looping left and Florian goes for a single and Penn is stopping it once again but Penn is starting to gas. BJ with a great uppercut and then a left hook on the button. Head kick from Florian. Leg kick from Florian. Thats the bell, a close close round id give it to Penn 10-9 but Florian could have won it easily.

Round three: Head kick from Florian misses. Florian goes in for another take down Penn lands a knee while their clinched up against the fence. Nice elbow from Penn and a uppercut from Penn also. Florian didnt do much up against the cage but for some body shots. Florian with a good right and Penn lands a solid left. Florian once again grabs the single leg walks Penn over to the cage and is holding on. Good knee and then right hook from Penn. Florian again pushes him up against the cage and is just content to hold him there. Penn sits down and hits a switch escapes and lands a good right. Florian looks for a superman punch but gets hit with a sharp right from Penn. Again id say 10-9 Penn although it was another close round. Florian cant seem to do much in the clinch up against the cage.

Round four: Kenny attacks and Penn catches him with a good right. Again Florian presses him up against the cage. Penn lands two really good uppercuts and then gets a big double leg take down. Penn looking to pass. Florian with some good elbows from the bottom but Penn is landing some of his own from half guard. Penn is looking to pass to mount. Penn starting to land some big rights now. Nice elbow from Penn. Penn jumps into full mount now and hes landing some big shots and Florian is covering up and he gives up his back!!! BIG left elbow from Penn now. Penn now gets his back again and locks in a rear naked choke and its in tight!!! Thats it!!! BJ Penn with a HUGE submission victory.

Forrest Griffin vs. Anderson Silva

Round one: Both guys are circling looking for some feel and distance. Nice leg kick from Griffin but Silva catches it lands a glancing right and then a leg kick of his own. Inside leg kick from Griffin. Silva charges forward and then lands a right that drops Griffin but doesnt hurt him. Griffin gets up and smiles. Silva was patient and didnt charge. Griffin throws some punches and Silva taunts him. Silva standing in front of Griffin with a Roy Jones bob and weave and drops him with a straight left!!!! Griffin gets up and seems to be throwing marshmallows. Griffin charges in and Silva lands a straight right while backing up. Griffin goes down and hes out!!! WOW, Silva wins on a punch that didnt even look to be that powerful I am AMAZED that Forrest Griffin did not get back up after that punch. None the less Silva once again dominates.

Round one: Leg kick from Amir. Head kick from Amir blocked. Another leg kick from Sadollah. Hendricks lands two big lefts and now he lands a bunch of unanswered uppercuts dirty boxing style. Kendall Grove vs. Ricardo Almeida

Round one: Almeida charges in and is going right for his bread and butter with a take down attempt. Grove with a thai clinch up against the fence using his reach. Nice elbow from Grove and Almeida is still trying to work the take down. Nice looping right from Almeida as he charges in. Nice body kick from Grove lands with a snap and Almeida tries to use the leg for a take down but Grove stuffs it again. Grove with a brief guillotine attempt. Grove is really working the underhooks to his advantage. Almeida with a body lock and leg sweep finally gets a take down. Grove stands up Almeida with his feet but cant slip out. Almeida right back on top in full guard. Almeida to half guard. Almeida now into side control and Grove is using the fence to stop from giving up his back. Grove stands up using the fence but Almeida with a big pickup slam and is right back on top. Thats the bell and while Grove did amazing early on with his take down defense and clinch Almeida capitalized late and won the round. 10-9 Almeida.

Round two: Almeida fake right and goes right to the double leg take down and gets it. Grove with a tight full guard. Grove slips right to the arm bar and has it locked in tight!!!!!! Almeida is in trouble!!!! WOW but somehow he slips out. Back to full guard of Grove Almeida is counting his lucky stars. Grove almost pulled a shocking submission. Body triangle from the bottom from Grove. Grove just working some elbows now. Almeida now working some good ground and pound with some solid punches. Almeida now into side control after Grove attempts a knee bar. Grove gets back half guard, but Almeida is landing some serious punches and elbows. Grove back to the feet. Nice knee from Grove, and Grove lands a great uppercut that snaps the head of Almeida back and then a BIG knee right on the chin. Almeida just holding onto the legs trying to get back his bearings and Almeida then gets another take down right at the bell. Grove actually was winning early in the 1st 2 mins with an amazing arm bar attempt but Almeida recovered. 10-9 Almeida.

Round three: Inside leg kick from Almeida. Almeida with a slippery right and then jumps right into another take down. Grove walks up the cage and is right back to his feet. Good knees from Grove to the stomach. Nice jab from Grove as they separate. Almeida looks tired and jumps down to the mat sloppily. Grove with two big elbows and then let him up. Almeida looks gassed. Nice knee from Grove. Almeida tired and gassed dives into another take down and is lucky to get that one. Grove trying to land punches from the bottom and briefly goes for an oma plata. Nice elbow from Grove from the bottom. Almeida just riding out the clock at this point. Grove rolling over for a kimura and gives up on that. Grove kicks off Almeida and jumps to his feet. Almeida lands a good right and now goes for another double leg but doesnt have the gusto to finish it off and Grove is landing mutiple elbows at the bell. Grove looked good and probably did much more damage and put in much more work along with an amazing near finish with an arm bar, but Almeida held the dominant position all fight.

Kurt Pellegrino vs. Josh Neer

Round one: Neer with a right and Pellegrino lands a solid one of his own. Neer with a front kick and Pellegrino with a good body shot then goes for the double leg take down and nails it. Pellegrino jumps into half guard now. Neer works his way back to full guard and Pellegrino is working some elbows. Neer looking for an arm bar now. Kurt slides his way out and now working hammer fists. Neer locks in an arm bar!!! But pellegrino manages to slam his way out of it. Nice right from Kurt. Neer now looking for a triangle. Pellegrino gets to half guard and lands a big elbow now and is peppering in some body shots. Pellegrino smothering Neer, but Neer is keeping him honest with great submission attempts from the bottom and thats the bell. Pellegrino gets it 10-9 but he didnt do much and Neer seemed very close to a good submission locking in.

Round two: Neer has a small mouse under the left eye and cut on the bridge of his nose. Leg kick from Neer finds its mark. Both guys land a leg kick simultaneously. Nice right left combo from Pellegrino. Big right from Pellegrino and then he shoots in and has one leg while Neer sprawls out. Pellegrino relentless and sucks it in and finishes the take down. Neer tries and almost gets a triangle choke but Pellegrino again slips out. Full guard for Neer as Pellegrino tries to improve position. Nice right from Pellegrino. Nice elbows from the bottom from Neer. Neer with another brief arm bar attempt but misses and now he goes right to another triangle attempt and Pellegrino is trying to pass during the attempt and slips into half guard and out of the submission. Pellegrino now in full mount!!! Neer gives up his back and Pellegrino has both hooks and is looking to finish the fight!! Thats the bell, again Pellegrino 10-9 easy for his domination on top. Neer though has been really close to locking in a submission mutiple times so lets see if he wants to keep it on the feet or try to keep working from the bottom.

Round three: Body kick from Pellegrino and Neer with a front kick. Pellegrino dives in and lands another take down effortlessly hes 3 for 3. Familiar spot for both fighters as Pellegrino is on top in the dominant position, while Neer tries to lock in a desperate submission attempt instead of trying to work his way back to his feet. Elbow from Neer on the bottom and it looks like Pellegrino is bleeding from the top of his head. Pellegrino posturing up to do some damage. Neer with another triangle attempt and again Pellegrino shrugs it off with ease. Half guard for Neer and Pellegrino is still working his way to the mount. Full mount for Pellegrino!! Neer slips out and is finally on top himself but with only 30 seconds left its too little to late. Back to the feet and Pellegrino goes for a take down and Neer sprawls out and now is landing some big elbows on Pellegrino unanswered!!! Thats the bell there was not enough time left for Neer and Pellegrino should take this fight unanimously.

Derrick Thomas Death, How did Derrick Thomas die, Thomas dies on February 8, 2000, at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. On January 23, 2000, Thomas’ 1999 Chevrolet Suburban went off Interstate 435 as he and two passengers were driving to Kansas City International Airport during a snowstorm, where he was going to fly to St. Louis to watch the NFC Championship game; police reports indicate that Thomas, who was driving, was speeding and weaving through traffic at the time of the accident. Thomas and one of the passengers were not wearing seat belts and both were thrown from the car; the passenger was killed instantly. The second passenger, who was wearing his safety belt, walked away from the scene uninjured. Thomas was left paralyzed from the chest down. He died on February 8, 2000, in Miami, of a pulmonary embolism, a massive blood clot that developed in his paralyzed lower extremities and traveled through his venous system to his lungs.
